Hi Andy, great to hear from you! The multiples of 8 rule generally applies to jumbo blanket and jumbo velvet, not worsted weight velvet. (Basically just the huge ones!).

To clarify, the multiple of 8 rule is mostly for if you’re trying to make a pattern designed for worsted weight yarn work for jumbo yarn. If the pattern is already using a multiple of 7 or 10, you likely won’t have to change anything to make it fit the jumbo yarn.

However, generally, I still prefer a multiple of 8 over 7 or 10 because it’s easier to multiply and divide. Once you start using multiples of 7, you can’t ever really change the multiple. With a multiple of 8, you could still increase by 2, 4, or even 6 if you wanted to. I have a longer breakdown of this “multiple” concept in this blog post: https://littleworldofwhimsy.com/how-to-crochet-perfect-circles-and-spheres-for-designing/.

I hope this helps clarify, and let me know if you have any follow up questions!

Julia

I’m fairly new to crocheting so I’m still learning all the ins and outs. Just a couple of questions. First, when you say to use the multiples of 8 rule for “jumbo blanket and velvet yarn…”, do you mean that applies to jumbo blanket and *jumbo* velvet or all velvet yarn in general? And second, I’ve seen some patterns use multiples of 7 or even 10 when working the round. Would you still use multiples of 8 when resizing the pattern? I could see that working for 7, but how would you resize for other multiples, such as 10? Thank you for these awesome guides, they’ve made entering the world of crocheting amigurumi a breeze!

Hi Jess! Whoops — You’re right. I designed the narwhal pattern before I realized that 5mm is the ideal. Honestly, I think 9mm still works fine, but if you think the fabric is too loose I would recommend sizing down. Thanks for catching that, and sorry about the miscommunication!

Happy crocheting,
Julia

I just have one question– you mentioned above that your jumbo patterns all use a 5 mm hook (H), but your jumbo narwhal pattern calls for a 9 mm hook (M) so that is the size I ordered to scale up your whale pattern. Should I get a 5 mm hook instead? Thank you!
